Paid-On-Call Firefighter

The City of West Plains is always accepting applications for Paid-On-Call Firefighter.

The position of Paid-On-Call (POC) Firefighter is a contractual position and is used on an “on call” basis. This is not a career position. A POC Firefighter typically has other means of primary employment and makes emergency incidents based on availability from that employment. Any questions regarding the role of a POC can be directed to any of the personnel of the WPFD. If you meet the following requirements, you could be our next POC Firefighter! To become a POC Firefighter, you must:

  • Reside in the city limits of West Plains and be a full time resident (with exceptions).
  • Be 18 to 60 years of age (with exceptions).
  • Have at least a high school diploma or GED.
  • Hold a valid Missouri drivers license and have your own means of transportation, either as owner or be the insured driver on record.
  • Have a liberal availability to respond to emergency calls, trainings, etc.
  • Be physically capable to perform the duties of a firefighter.
  • Prior fire service training is a plus but lack of training does not disqualify.

Career Positions

The City of West Plains is accepting applications/resumes at City Hall, 1910 Holiday Lane or online at www.westplains.net for a Firefighter.  Duties include responds to fire alarms and other emergency calls on and off duty, controlling and extinguishing fires, protecting life and property, and maintaining fire equipment.  All Firefighters must live inside the corporate limits unless exempted.  Must have a High school diploma or GED and be Firefighter I and II/IFSAC Certified.  Must be able to obtain Missouri CDL–Class B w/Airbrake endorsement.  Will be required to pass a comprehensive written fire exam and physical ability test.  Must be willing to work 24-hour shifts.  Deadline: September 18, 2017 at 5:00 pm. The City of West Plains is now accepting applications/resumes for the position of Assistant Fire Chief.  The department consists of 15 fulltime firefighters including administration and 15-20 paid on call firefighters, working out of 3 fire stations. This position will perform administration and skilled firefighting duties, assist in directing the activities and personnel of the Fire Dept.  Supervises all Fire Dept. operations during the absence of the Fire Chief.  Under the direction of the Fire Chief, is responsible for all training activities of Fire Dept. personnel regarding policies, programs, firefighting, and fire prevention techniques and procedures.  Administrative duties include the recommendation for purchases of supplies and equipment, assist in preparation of annual budget estimates, and efficient use of personnel and equipment in carrying out firefighting activities.  The employee works independently in supervising all technical operations and in seeing that desired work results are achieved. A minimum of 3 years demonstrated management experience in a senior administrative position in a career or combination department is required.  Must live inside the corporate limits of the City of West Plains.
